Shiva means “Auspicious”, the name given to the Spirit by the Shaivas. Some believe that Shiva is the peaceful form of Rudra, but it is not so but. Shiva in reality stands for the God or Spirit which is auspicious.
Shiva was first used in Rig Veda(as per my knowledge)
Shiva, Rudra and Maheshwar can be considered as the names given to same deity. But some consider it different aspects of one God.
Shiv is Nirakaar, but is shown in Sakaar form sometimes. In Sakaar form Shiva applies ash all over his body, sports a third eye, and has flowing locks(Jatajut).
